Solidarity: a multi-level and interdisciplinary perspective

Over the last years, the issue of solidarity has come to prominence in the European public debate under the effect of the economic and migration crisis faced by the EU. If solidarity is a cornerstone for the cohesion and development of a community of individuals, groups or territorial units, the issue of how to foster intra- and inter-EU solidarity is essential in a multicultural, politically and socially diverse society exposed to increasing social and economic tensions leading to exclusion, intolerance and prejudice. Solidarity is not only topical but also a complex phenomenon. Normative, empirical and institutional aspects have to be considered to understand the contents, sources and effects of solidarity. Hence, we believe that only an interdisciplinary approach putting together philosophers, historians, anthropologists, economists, social and political scientists can come to grips with the issue. The purpose of the workshop is to gather together a qualified group of scholars that has approached the concept from different theoretical, disciplinary, normative and methodological perspectives in order to explore the nature, causes, characteristics and consequences of solidarity and anti-solidarity behaviors at different levels.
